Chilli Culture, Bangkok 2015

Chowing down on the yummy Thai food.

Chilli Culture

After checking in to our hotel, the first thing we looked for was food. We decided on one of Mikey’s favorite spots – Chilli Culture that sits right around the corner from our hotel on Soi 11.

The ambiance of the restaurant was intimate with dim lighting and delicate decor.

We ordered a couple of teas and a papaya salad to start. I told them to make sure mine had no chili, but I guess they didn’t understand. They game me one so spicy that I could barely eat a third spoon full, so I went ahead and ordered a second one. The taste was okay. It had more fish sauce than any other seasoning and wasn’t well balanced in flavor. I love spice in my food, but I like being able to enjoy the other flavors of the dish as well. The tea I ordered had a weird taste so I ordered a bottled water and just sipped from Mikey’s black iced tea.

For my entree, I got basil fried rice. It was super oily, but had a better balance of flavor than the papaya salad. Mikey ordered his favorite – the crab fried rice. His was a lot tastier. Fluffy with amazing flavors.

The service was really slow. We had about four different servers that catered to our table, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Most of them huddled around the host stand and talked. Mikey explained that Thailand’s service is typically slow even with many employees. So we were patient.

As far as the cost, the prices of the food items seemed a bit ridiculous to me. I think you’re paying more for the ambiance than the actual food or service. We may come back for crab rice take out, but I would rather not dine in this restaurant in the future.

After dinner, we made our way to one of the hundreds of 7-Elevens closest to us for basic necessities and water. Everything sold there is super cheap, and there’s usually one or two in each soi (street).

As we were coming out of the store, we bumped into the loudest little kitty ever. It was so sweet and kept meowing. I wanted to feed it my leftover basil fried rice, but Mikey said no. How sad! It definitely made me miss my kitties back home, Lady Underling and Sir Minion, but it also made me the city feel a little bit like home.
